What's happening in my neighborhood: Atmospheric River! Seattle received 3" in 24 hours...not the 8" elsewhere in Washington; I am happy to be living at the top of a hill today. Cheers~
We have only had two days (since my last post) where the air quality levels were below 50.
Even in the house, with air purifiers running, my throat is raw and my nose feels gummy. To add insult to injury, TPTB made the decision early on that there would not be an effort to put the fire out, just contain it, as it was mostly burning in wilderness areas; if businesses, homes, and people were going to be displaced then the effort to put it out would commence. I miss playing outside and having my windows open. Thank goodness that rain is finally coming to Seattle this weekend! Flying over the North Cascades, I snapped this photo of the mountains appearing so serene and beautiful...but on land the air was smokey, hot, and stagnant. Checking the Washington Smoke blog: Our yard and garden is covered with grit and it's weirdly dusky outdoors. Looks like a fine weekend to knit and bake bread.
A thick plume of smoke is beginning to blanket Puget Sound for the weekend. It is eerily quiet and I have seen no birds. The sun did not come up today, not even the red ball that we could see through the haze yesterday. It is a sickly yellowish and thick looking sky, i.e. something out of a dystopian movie. The levels of pollutants is in entering the very unhealthy-hazardous range. This, on top of everything...and for us it is just smoke, not raging wildfires, in our backyards. Another week of this before we get a bit of rain to reboot our atmosphere which means no going for my daily walk or tending my garden---because it's too dangerous to be outside breathing the air! until then...quarantine within the quarantine. Sigh. I am knitting to soothe my soul and enjoying catching up on some good reads, including: To find out what Annabelle is knitting-click here
September 2015 Super blood moon eclipse time 19. Composite by Mike Taylor Photo Central Maine Happy New Year (running a bit slow on this greeting, I know-but it's been a busy start to the year :^) Tonight is our first lunar eclipse of the year, and it's also the third super-moon in a row, so it should be quite spectacular. North Americans will not even have to stay up that late to see its magic-and our friends and family in the southern hemisphere will be witnessing this event with us too. Here is the time sequence for all my friends and neighbors here in the NW: Want to find out more? Visit EarthSky Super Blood Moon Eclipse composite. Photo by T. Byrne January 2019
