In the last six years, the number of homeless has risen dramatically in the state of Washington; currently there are over 30,000 homeless children, half of them are 5th graders or younger, and 20% of these homeless kids live in King County. This is disturbing considering our state boasts to have over 226,000 millionaires and at least 8 billionaires.
As there are not always enough beds available in shelters, families end up sleeping in tents and on the street. This is not the kind of camping that I like to envision-especially for young children-so when I heard about the Sleeping Bag project entitled "Sleepless in Seattle" I was interested in helping. Today was the Big Give (check out Eddie Wang on Indigogo ) with a plan to supply 3500 sleeping bags to King County homeless, along with a warm hat and gloves. I donated four of my Kid's Bags to the sleeping bag drive.
I realize that warm sleeping bags will not solve the homeless problem, but I imagine that a brand new cozy kid-size sleeping bag will offer a bit of comfort to a young child. You can help too! I have a Winter Sale in my Etsy shop: for every Cozy Bag for Homeless purchased, I will donate one Kid's Bag to a local agency that offers shelter to homeless families with children. Please consider sponsoring a donation of warmth this season.
